Why would opponent resign here?

I am confused by this game. I'm down some material, but opponent resigned immediately after I took his knight because I feared mate would be inevitable if I didn't. Couldn't black just take my knight with his queen here?

It would be a blunder for black to take your knight with their queen (12... Qxg5??) because then you could recapture with your pawn (13. fxg5) or your queen (13. Qxg5).
Your opponent should not resign.Material is roughly equal and the attack could fizzle out if white makes some mistakes.
Sometimes people resign because of an irl emergency
he thought you may go queen h5 and give a mate with knight and queen
and you ve captured his knight for free in previous move, so this both things made him think like that

But if I play Qh5, doesn't that mean black can just sack the knight on g5 and take that combination away? I mean, it would hang the queen but knowing how bad I am at mating patterns it would still be enough to give me pause.

You see why I am 100% against using engines or any form of AI to analyze games.
Some opponents just give up and rage when he/she loses a piece. take that as a win and call it a day :)

It isn't the machine's fault that ppreyna94 resigned after 12 Qxg4.

The machine CAN give you an idea of how bad it would have been for ppreyna94 after 12...Qxg5 13 fxg5: ~6 point advantage for you.
It can also give you some idea of the difficulty of the position for White after, for example, 12...Qxg5 13 fxg5 d6. Apparently, 14 Qh5, 14 Qf3, or 14 Qd1 would all have been ways for you to retain at least a 5-point advantage.
Perhaps another point of potential interest: ppreyna94's apparent best option for continuing to fight would have been 12...Be7 (with you still having an ~1.9-point advantage after 13 Qh5).
