  3. Smothered Mate Epic Fail

i tried mating my opponent using the basic checkmate pattern but didn't realize his Queen was there for the rescue.

lichess.org/mh3ukjy1/white#41

thats a pretty epic fail

Nice one :)
And with 20. Nd6+ an easy win.

Qxc7

20.Ne5+ wins a whole piece.

yes i saw Ne5 discovered but i was going for the mate.

after Ne5 doesn't win a piece, if you take the knight black has Re1+

@jobwoge You are taking with the wrong piece.

20...Kh8 21 Qxd7! -> no Re1+ available. If Rxe5, then Black gets back rank mated ... otherwise you keep your extra piece.
(20...Kf8 21 Nxd7+ is fine because it's a check)

20. Nd6+ wins the Rook
20. ... Kf8 21. Nxe8 Kxe8 22. Qe6+ Kd8 23. Rd1
edit ofc Nd6+ not Ne6+

20. Nd6+ and trade knight for Rock and pawn. Black is lost here.
