I don't know... when I look back at my recent games against stronger opponents, games where I played open Sicilian variations as white or Spanish as black are among those I feel best about. In other words, exactly the openings everyone tells me to dread and to avoid at any cost. Sure, I lost most of those games, but not because of lack of opening theory knowledge.

I love playing the main lines with black, so it would be silly to spend time on studying sidelines for white. Of course I know many of them from the black side, by necessity.
