What is the difference between IM and a GM?

How much Elo does it take to become an IM?

The first IM titles were awarded in 1950 and the requirements to achieve this distinction have undergone a number of changes since then. Currently, FIDE awards the title of International Master to a player who reaches 2400 Elo points in classical chess and achieves 1 IM norm.

How does one achieve the title of GM?

Throughout history there have only been 1,928 grandmasters worldwide. Currently FIDE awards the title of Grandmaster to a player who reaches 2500 Elo points in classical chess and achieves 3 GM norms.

Who has the highest ELO?

The current world champion Magnus Carlsen has the highest ELO ever achieved by a human 2881 points. Computers have taken chess to another level, Alpha Zero has reached 3400 ELO points.
