FM Philipp Wendl wins the Salzkammergut Open in Bad Ischl

(the picture shows the Styrian youth players and their trainer at the Salzkammergut Schachopen)

The Styrian chess federation organises trips to open tournaments for our youth players together with a trainer who helps them prepare for their games and analyzes with them afterwards. This time FM David Schernthaner coached 13 motivated Styrian talents who participated in the 5 groups of the 17. Salzkammergut Schachopen in Bad Ischl. All in all there were 259 participants. Most of our young players did well and nearly all won some rating points. In the A group we were especially successful:

Simon Grünwald (3rd place) and Philipp Wendl

The 17 year old Styrian player FM Philipp Wendl just won his first open tournament. He scored 4 out of 5 and won first prize because he had the best tiebreak in the A group of the 17. Salzkammergut Schachopen in Bad Ischl. Philipp is very strong at calculation and he likes wild complications. Simon Grünwald also scored 4 points and our youngest player, the 10-year-old Chicheng Leon Chen, scored 3 out of 5 and inofficially crossed 2100 FIDE rating with this result.

Winning a brilliancy prize

The game I show here was played in april 2025 in the Austrian championships under 18 where Philipp won the bronze medal. At the Austrian championships under 16 and under 18 two brilliancy prizes were awarded, and the one for the boys categories went to FM Philipp Wendl:
