OTB Victory in Easter Open 25+5

Over the boardAnalysisChessLichess
its been awhile since OTB competitions went underway and i have only competed in 2 events this year so far due to lack of money or simply transportation that we can manage to pay for. we were lucky to enter the PineCrest Open which was a event we didnt even plan on going till a few nights where we incidentally saw that it was on the weekened and planned to go. it was saturday, the time control was 25 minutes plus 5 sec increment and there were 5 rounds ahead but considering my last performance was in november i knew i was in for a long haul. how did i win you may ask? lets find out.

it was the morning, we packed up and my dad brought us over to the place while we were trying to find directions to the location. now prior to this my phone was having problems but after a bit of shuffling we managed to find the right directions and said goodbye to my dad as he left. i gave the entry fee on site which was 20 dollars so not bad and me alongside my mom both went to a McDonalds nearby. i helped setup the pieces before going and then when we went, i ate the breakfast then came back 5 mins before the round began so just in time for the 1st match. it was against a russian father who i saw in the beginning speaking with his son which did captivate me for a bit as i thought he was really strong. the game however, was pretty much a simple dryed out caro kann game with me being up a pawn from the opening and winning another in the endgame, to which point he simply resigned as i am guessing he didnt want a slow painful death

the 2nd game was more complicated near the end with a very unclear position but it was the debut of my favorite chess opening known as the vant krujis, the move e3 which already comes as a big surprise. my opponent and i shuffled around in a type of scandi position with the queen surprisingly going to d8 and then i was just pretty much slightly better. i missed some moves and some hard subtle tactics but game ended pretty nicely there. the 3rd round was against my friend Vladamir who was the big person to beat but since i already felt it was too complicated, both of us agreed to the draw at the end and yeah the annotations are there in the study so check them out as it was long. the 4th game i won pretty easily as my opponent failed to take advantage of his pawn advantage and i converted cleanly.

Now you might be asking : How did i manage to win the tournament?
well its pretty simple actually, Vladamir who could have been able to go for first lost to a small but nice child in the 4th round while i won. so statistically it all mattered on my game with the child as Vladamir couldn't qualify for first. i had 4.5 and needed to win cause otherwise if the child aka Nicolas Drawed he would win the tournament by a half point. i managed to win the game in a bit of a easy win and simple conversion, mating my opponent and since nobody besides Nicolas could catch up to me i was safe and won the tournament along with the cash prize of 75 dollars.

the Easter open was a fun event and showed my real progress since November, its already late and while i didnt bother much about celebrating Easter today, the event was super fun so cheers and sweet dreams
