Chess My Pieces! A Website of 'Chess Carving' Puzzles
A twist on the usual 'find the best move' puzzles.Introduction
If you enjoy solving chess puzzles and want to challenge your mind with something a bit different, check out my new creation: Chess My Pieces! This is a website for chess puzzles which are referred to in general as chess "carving problems".
In very simple terms: You are given a chess position, but the pieces are obscured (represented by white and black triangles); you can only see which squares have white pieces and which ones have black. You are given the state of the game: "White to move and mate-in-one". All you have to do is identify all the pieces correctly!
The site is completely free and there's no limit on how many puzzles you can solve.
Trivial Example
Here's what a trivial puzzle and it's solution would look like:
Game Play
The game play is really simple.
- Just drag-and-drop pieces from outside the board onto the white and black triangles.
- You can also use click-to-move. Just click on a piece to select it, then click on the target square to move that piece there.
- You can swap pieces on the board (white for white, black for black). You can drag a piece off the board to undo.
- Once you think you have cracked the position, hit Submit to check your solution.
Remember,
- You can't put pieces on empty squares
- You can't put pieces of one colour on triangles of the other colour
- It needs to be a valid chess position
Interestingly, for most of the puzzles, there can be multiple valid solutions. As long as the position you create is valid and satisfies the mate-in-one criterion, it is adjudged to be correct.
That's literally all there is to it!
A Challenge: Dive Right In
Intrigued? Dive right in! Here's a challenge for you. White to move and mate-in-one. Identify the pieces.

All Levels of Difficulty
Are you a chess beginner? Or an accomplished player and puzzle solver? You can set your level of difficulty by selecting the different puzzle modes.
- Trivial: Both kings are shown. You can use as many spare pieces as you want of each type.
- Easy: The kings are hidden but a few random pieces are shown. You can use as many spare pieces as you want of each type.
- Medium: All pieces are hidden. You can use as many spare pieces as you want of each type.
- Expert: All pieces are hidden. You must use only, and all of the spare pieces provided.
- Insane: All pieces are shown, but they are jumbled up! There are no spare pieces to choose from. You just have to swap pieces on the board.
Share Puzzles with Your Friends
