Hikaru Nakamura's funniest ever chess game!

ChessTacticsStrategyChess PersonalitiesAnalysis
This game features a Dutch Defence with a difference :)

Hi all

This is one of the funniest most outrageous games of Hikaru Nakamura - one of my favourite Super Grandmasters:

(Check out my Nakamura playlist at : http://kingscrusher.tv/nakamura )

The very first move of Nakamura shows that he wants an interesting game - the Dutch defence:

c6 is interesting in response to the Anti-Dutch defence move Bg5:

An early strike at b2:

Nakamura takes the potentially "poisoned b2 pawn" :

White tries to ramp up the dynamic potential for the pieces:

The queen just goes back to a5 - White does seem to have slight compensation here for the pawn:

And yet another queen move!

g6 doesn't seem to help develop pieces:

https://lichess.org/study/1ADKFfZJ/riwehe9M#18

Nor does d6:

Finally a piece moves which isn't the queen:

https://lichess.org/study/1ADKFfZJ/riwehe9M#22

Nakamura is counter-saccing a pawn:

Will the King find safety on c7 ?

Final position

Takeaway points

  • Knowing when to sacrifice back a pawn is important
  • Being behind in development does seem quite risky but the key question is always how to actually concretely exploit the position
  • The King can sometimes find safety itself without officially castling
  • Playing in such a provocative manner is perhaps more enabled by being an amazing tactician
