How Correct Were Mikhail Tal's Sacrifices? - Part 1

ChessChess PersonalitiesAnalysisTactics
Many pundits claim that Mikhail Tal's sacrifices were objectively quite unsound, but how true is this claim, really?

Writing these articles took about 4 months of reasonably constant daily work (March 2024 till June 2024). I looked through almost 3000 games by Mikhail Tal. A 200-part series on Mikhail Tal's sacrfices takes some work, yes!

Important Information

Note that this article will be updated from time to time as I haven't finished writing all of the articles yet (as of early June 2024; I hope to finish by August).

This article (part 1) as well as the second, third, and fourth articles of this series (parts 2, 3, and 4) is a "master" article which includes all the important information you need to read the remaining, analysis-driven parts of this project. Thus, keep referring to parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 as you read the remaining parts.

Introduction

"There are two types of sacrifices: correct ones and mine" ~Mikhail Tal

Tal was known for his sense of humor, but many consider this statement to be factual. Admittedly, the assertion does make logical sense. After the Romantic era's last flames were extinguished, chess simply became less tactical and more positional. Now whether or not this is a positive or negative effect, and whether that statement even is true is an entirely different matter (perhaps a subject for a future blog post!). The point, though, is that it makes sense for sacrifices in the 1970's to be deemed incorrect according to modern day, ultra-accurate chess engines. Not only that, but modern day engines can utterly ridicule even the strongest player in the world, so why would they not also laugh at the 20th century magician's spells of tactical splendor? The logic is sound, but science is not math. Well, that perhaps depends on your philosophical approach, but you get my point.

In this series of articles, Tal's sacrifices will be put under the microscope, and I hope to actually back up, with data, the common pronouncement that Tal's sacrifices were objectively questionable. Read on as we explore Tal's magical world of fire on the board!

Methodology

An earlier draft of this article started out with this paragraph:

"I always aim to be comprehensive. However, I decided against including every single game that Tal has ever played because he played many games against much weaker opposition. Simultaneous exhibition games were thus not included; however, they're noted in this introductory post for completeness' sake. I also did not want to include games when Tal was just starting out his chess career. Since ratings were introduced by FIDE in 1970, I thought that would serve as a good cutoff point for analyzing Tal's sacrifices. That being said, Tal did play some wonderful sacrificial games before that time period. Therefore, a compromise was in order: in this analysis, all non-simul games by Tal after 1970 were included, with some remarkable games before 1970 also being included."

That is not the case anymore. As you will soon understand, the sacrifice search parameters I used did not yield as exhaustive of a result as I would have liked, so I had to manually review all of Tal's games. This meant that I uncovered some "forgotten" Tal games that many people are not aware of. Therefore, this analysis will be complete. No stone will be left unturned. All of Tal's games are included, and this means that this series of articles is basically a book!

To uncover Tal's sacrifices, I searched his games on ChessBase (MegaDatabase 2016) using the "sacrifice" search function (moves 5–40), which uncovers all games where any material, including pawns, was sacrificed. I did one run with Tal playing the White pieces and another with him playing the Black pieces so that I could exclude games where his opponent sacrificed material (oh those brave souls!). However, early on, I thankfully found that this approach was missing some games. For example, Tal's sacrificial games against Stephan Neurohr and Thomas Casper were not included. Therefore, I returned to the earlier approach of searching for all of Tal's games that included sacrifices, even those by his opponent, and only then curating those by manually reviewing them myself.

The problem with this approach was that games where "pseudo-sacrifices" occurred were also included in the search. A pseudo-sacrifice is defined by Wikitionary as "Something resembling a sacrifice that is not a true sacrifice, especially (chess) an offer of material made at no risk, since acceptance would lead to the gain of equal or greater material or checkmate." Obviously, when we talk about Tal's sacrifices, especially in the context of them being unsound, we're talking about true sacrifices where the sacrificed material is not recovered immediately. Hence, manual work was required to curate those games into true "Tal sac" games. In a sense, all sacrifices are pseudo-sacrifices, but the cutoff line is what's "reasonable" to be seen, and that's obviously entirely subjective.

A list of the curated games can be found in the "List of Games Included" section of this post. If you have any qualms about the inclusion or exclusion of certain games, do correct me, please! If you notice a sacrifice in part of a game but it's excluded, know that it's a pseudo-sacrifice. There might be some errors or disagreements, of course, but the vast majority of what could be deemed to be errors of omission are pseudo-sacrifices. Also note that, to my knowledge, ChessBase has no way of excluding games where Tal's opponent sacrificed material, so those games had to be removed as well.

Of course, all anyone cares about is the flashy games — the minor piece sacrifices, the rook sacrifices, and, of course, the positional queen sacrifices. However, since starting this project, and because I'm just a super meticulous person, a lot of "minor sacrifices" were included. Alongside the pieces he sacrificed, Tal also sacrificed a lot of pawns!

Also, let's not forget that Tal is human! There are some cases where Tal outright blunders. I tried to exclude those cases, but obviously a judgement call had to be made to see whether or not it was clear that Tal blundered or if he intended to sacrifice. Furthermore, forced sacrifices were excluded.

Moreover, to make sure that the method chosen did not miss out any important sacrificial games by Tal, I scoured the Internet for popular Tal games, especially those covered on YouTube, where Tal's genius illuminates the chess path of many beginners and advanced players alike.

Note that sacrifices were judged based on their "intention". Sometimes Tal would sacrifice a piece for three pawns, in which case said sacrifice would be labeled a "material imbalance" sacrifice. If Tal did the sacrifice to further his kingside attack, though, it would be labeled as a "kingside attack piece sacrifice". There are games, however, where Tal sacrificed more than once! If those sacrifices are unrelated to each other, they are included separately. That's why some games include several sacrifices.

I used the dates according to the chessgames.com website. Perhaps the MegaDatabase dates were more accurate. Let me know!

Note that the analysis was conducted with Stockfish 16.1 at a depth of 40+ for each move.

To keep this series interesting, each article contains ten games which were picked randomly so that different types of sacrifices could be included in the same article rather than having each small series of articles have one single type of sacrifice.

I have extensively documented everything so that only my subjective assessments can be debated instead of ruminations on missing data!

An Interesting Philosophical Point!

What if some sacrifices force other sacrifices to occur so that there are no better alternatives than a sacrifice later on? Yes, a very important question that is, well, better labeled as a shower thought. I don't have an answer here myself, but it's important to consider such questions as they can sometimes be foundational.

Methodology Part 2

The previous section showed how I believed I could reduce the workload and still produce a high quality study of Mikhail Tal's sacrifices. Unfortunately, after curosorily looking at a few excluded games (games which did not show up from the ChessBase search or the YouTube search), I noticed that many of them included sacrifices, some of which were absolutely beautiful. I was shocked. Even with his stature and universal adoration by chess fans, Mikhail Tal still had some games which have yet to be fully appreciated! Well, perhaps the reason is that Tal simply sacrificed so often and so brilliantly that he has an enormous amount of aesthetic, sacrificial games. That is true (as the articles will show!), and because it is true, I felt it prudent to showcase those games and to manually curate all ~3000 of Mikhail Tal's games. This article will thus include all of Tal's games. Note that due to space constraints from the Lichess blogging system, I will have to split this "Master" article into four parts. This work is longer than my novel!

The Different Groupings

In later parts of this series, we will give a composite score for Tal's sacrifices depending on several parameters, comparing different types and dates of sacrifices:

  1. Piece sacrifices vs. pawn sacrifices
  2. Queen vs. rook vs. bishop vs. knight vs. pawn sacrifices
  3. Obvious vs. non-obvious sacrifices
(There is the argument that back then, those sacrifices, the "obvious" ones, such as Nd5 in the Sicilian, were being created by the likes of Tal himself.)
  4. Classical vs. rapid vs. blitz games
  5. Crazy/flashy sacrifices vs. other sacrifices
  6. By general type of sacrifice (kingside attack, open king, etc.)
  7. Sacrifices by opening
  8. Early career vs. late career
  9. Sacrifices as White vs. as Black

... and more!

The Scale

It would be absolutely wretched to analyze the soundness of Tal's sacrifices from a purely objective perspective. Tal would definitely be disgusted with such an apporach, and we should be, too. By his own admission, Tal wanted to create chaos on the board and did not care, during the game at least, whether or not his sacrifices were "correct". Therefore, the soundness of Tal's sacrifices needs to be measured with a pragmatic backdrop. At the same time, it would be rather simplistic to just use a subjective scale. The scale I developed thus relies on both objective and subjective measures; the "engine correctness" of the sacrifice will be judged out of three points, while the pragmatic correctness of the sacrifice will be judged out of seven points, for a combined total of ten points, with the higher number indicating a more sound sacrifice.

I debated whether or not I should simplify the objective part of the scale. Ultimately, I decided that since the possibility of increased accuracy exists, it should be sought after. The objective part of the scale will hence be quite detailed. Here is how the sacrifice will be judged as compared with the engine's evaluation of the move:

From White's perspective:

Evaluation of move A and move BPoints for Move B
Move A chosen5 points
+3 to +∞ move A & +3 to +∞ move B5 points
+3 to +∞ move A & +2 to +3 move B4.5 points

+3 to +∞ move A & +0.3 to +0.5 move B0 points
+3 to +∞ move A & 0.00 to +0.3 move B0 points
+2 to +3 move A & +2 to +3 move B4.5 points
+2 to +3 move A & +1 to +2 move B3.5 points
+2 to +3 move A & +0.5 to +1 move B1 point

-0.5 to -1 move A & -1 to -2 move B0 points (rarely 1 point)

-2 to -3 move A & -2 to -3 move B0 points (sometimes 1 point)
-3 to -∞ move A & -3 to -∞ move B5 points

Move A is the engine move; move B is Tal's sacrificial move.

From Black's perspective:

+3 to +∞ move A & +3 to +∞ move B5 points

For the subjective part of the scale, which is basically my assessement of how correct Tal's sacrfice was, I focused on the difficulties Tal's sacrifice would set to his opponents. If the sacrifice were particularly hard to refute, in that the defending side had to find a series of only moves which seem to be very difficult for a human to find (because they are predicated on very deep tactical / positional points where a single square makes a difference), the sacrifice would score very high in terms of practical soundness. In contrast, if the defending side's moves were (almost) forced and the sacrifice did not pose any significant challenges, the sacrifice would score high in terms of practical unsoundness. I used a scale from 1–10 to determine the subjective part of the scale, then I combined it with the objective part of the scale (with a 70%/30% split as mentioned above) to give the composite soundness score.

Soundness Descriptions

10/10 a completely sound sacrifice
9/10 a very sound sacrifice
8/10 a sound sacrifice
7/10 a reasonably sound sacrifice
6/10 a slightly sound sacrifice
5/10 neutral
4/10 a slightly unsound sacrifice
3/10 a reasonably unsound sacrifice
2/10 an unsound sacrifice
1/10 a very unsound sacrifice
0/10 a completely unsound sacrifice

Definitions

If a definition is missing, it means that a term is quite well-known from "mainstream chess culture", so there's no need to separately define it.

  1. kingside / queenside attack sacrifice: when Tal's opponent is castled kingside/queenside and an attack is launched on that same side of the board. If Tal is castled on the opposite side, though, it would be labeled as an "opposite-side castling sacrifice".
  2. open king: a king that's in the center or an uncastled king that's not artificially castled
  3. desperate sacrifice: Tal was already lost and sacrificed to make it more difficult for his opponent to win
  4. conversion sacrifice: sacrificing material to more easily convert a winning position
  5. liquidating sacrifice: a sacrifice that simplifies the position greatly, heading toward an almost assured draw. Contrast with "equalizing sacrifice".
  6. equalizing sacrifice: a sacrifice that forces a draw. Contrast with "liquidating sacrifice".
  7. gaining central / passed pawns sacrifice: sacrificing a piece to gain central or passed pawns
  8. defensive pawn sacrifice: sacrificing a pawn to defend
  9. pawn sacrifice for activity: the queen muncher: specifically giving up the b2-/b7-pawn after the queen attacks said pawn to gain activity elsewhere on the board
  10. endgame pawn sacrifice: a general category for pawn sacrifices in the endgame that have different goals
  11. not retreating, but pseudo-sacrificing: pseudo-sacrificing (see definition above) instead of retreating passively
  12. Some openings I don't consider as gambits. For example, the King's Indian Defense main line or Exchange variation is not a "gambit". The same can be said for the Queen's Gambit. Semi-gambits are early c4/c5 gambits in some Queen's Pawn positions, like the Catalan, Grünfeld, and Benoni, where the pawn cannot be immediately recovered (usually it can be immediately won back with Qa5+).
  13. (when material up) qualifier: The sacrifice occurred when Tal was already better off in terms of material.
  14. distal: a sacrifice that is not related to the "central action". For example, a queenside pawn being sacrificed to further a kingside attack (distal kingside attack pawn sacrifice).
  15. proximal: a sacrifcie that is related to the "central action". For example, a kingside pawn being sacrificed to further a kingside attack (proximal kingside attack pawn sacrifice).

List of Games Included

After following the methods mentioned in the "Methodology" section, the following Tal games were included in this study. I've divided them by type of sacrifice, where the "central theme" of the sacrifice is considered. For example, if pawns are sacrificed to attack the king, the game would be included under "kingside attack" games and not "pawn sacrifice" games. The central theme of the sacrifice is more important. Some of Tal's games did include multiple, unrelated sacrifices, and those (crazy) games were thus included in two sections. It is important to consider also that some sacrifices, such as open king sacrifices, can be further divided into pawn, minor piece, rook, and queen sacrifices against an open king. Those further subdivisions are included in parantheses. Several analyses will be conducted, with some analyses making use of the subdivisions and others not doing so.

There are of course games which are difficult to categorize, such as Yehezkel Klevitzki vs. Mikhail Tal, 1952, 37 moves. Is it an open king sacrifice or a kingside attack sacrifice? I had to make a few tough decisions, but hopefully they made sense!

For more details, look into the "inclusion criteria" for each article.

Famous Games

I searched YouTube with the keywords "Mikhail Tal" and looked at all the available 500 results (YouTube has a limit of 500 results), noting all the games covered by those 500 results. I then searched with the keywords "Tal chess" and tried to uncover any videos missed by the first search. The search was conducted in early March 2024, logged out and using a Luxembourgish IP. YouTube shorts were included, some of them being irrelevant; there were also irrelevant YouTube videos toward the end of the search. Playlists were also included, so all of the videos inside of the playlist had to be taken account of. I excluded games where no true sacrifice occurred. I did not include the list of YouTube links in this article because it would create too much clutter and because I do not like promoting videos whose quality I haven't carefully reviewed. In any case, one can recreate the list, or at least come close to it, by using the same parameters I have. The list is also available on request (if there's a good reason for its use).

Note that the counts may contain errors as they were done manually. However, the errors will be slight and the main point was just to make sure the methodology is good enough and did not miss out on any important games, so, in that respect, the aim was achieved. When I'm not sure of the count, I add a tilde.

Also note that the total count may be higher because some videos contain multiple Tal games.

As a curious point, the Bukhuti Gurgenidze game, while a very nice sacrificial game by Tal, is not as amazing or flashy as some of his other games, so it is a bit surprising to see it being so popular on YouTube.

Games Not Found From Methodology #1 (From the Chessgames.com Database)

As mentioned, I was not satisfied with the results I had obtained, so I decided to look at all of Tal's games. Here are the resutls of this search. Excluded are the games already found from the ChessBase and/or YouTube searches. The games for each category will be updated alongside the games found from YouTube, giving a final list with all of Tal's games in a particular sacrifice category. The final list will be found in part 4 of this series (which is still part of the same master artilcle) as again the Lichess blogging system has space constraints.
