Defending against an Attack

StrategyTacticsChess
Starting attacks can always be fun, but not for the person being attacked. Here we'll learn from chess players like Lasker and Giri how to defend.

“One doesn’t have to play well, it’s enough to play better than your opponent.” – Siegbert Tarrasch

Defending against a Sacrifice

Here is a game from Lasker where his opponent attacked too early:

Lasker followed general guidelines for defending against an attack, such as:

  • Bring all your pieces into the defense
  • Exchange off your opponent's attacking pieces

With a lack of attacking pieces, Frank Marshall resigned.

Pushing your Pawns against an Attack

Sometimes, pushing your kingside pawns can be helpful against an attack, but always be very cautious, since it could potentially create weak squares.

Counterattack!

Another thing you can do when being attacked is counterattack your opponent. Here is a game where Anish Giri was being attacked, but instead of defending, he attacked his opponent and won.

A Double-Edged Game

To end the blog, let me show you a double-edged game that shows the importance of king safety. Both sides make many mistakes in defense/attack that we can learn from.
